The art of the 1990s is associated with conceptual acuity and formal-aesthetic reduction, but also with free use of formats and an expansion of curatorial activity. It was during this period that Axel and Barbara Haubrok began building their impressive collection with its focus on international trends in conceptual art. They are especially interested in museum-scale sculptures and objects, but also rigorous material from the field of film and photography, as well as abstract painting. The works in their collection (now numbering more than a thousand) are minimalist, often black-and-white or monochrome, but also charming and cheerful. Most characteristic are those where a rich vein of humour is to be found behind the rigorous formal sobriety.
