PAINTING IS NO PROBLEM 鈥 this bold assertion, and the title of a
work by Eberhard Ross, inevitably raises the question 鈥榃hat is painting?鈥 鈥楶ainting is an artform that involves the application of paint onto a surface such as paper, canvas or wood鈥, says the dictionary. The three artists EBERHARD ROSS,
PAUL DIESTEL and
SANDER REIJGERS deal very differently with this artform. Ross, in his mysteriously luminous paintings with their fine chromatic gradations and delicately lineated surfaces, is interested in the impact of colour. Diestel paints his nature-inspired sculptures so as to heighten their expressive power, while Reijgers conceives painting as the expression of a fascination with the materiality of paint and the physical act of its application.
