A positively sensational document from the beginnings of photography is a Daguerreotype by Louis Daguerre (1787-1851) himself, a 鈥淧ortrait of Doroth茅e L茅ocardie Cotte鈥 of 1844.
A special focus of this autumn鈥檚 auction is on classic reportage photography from the 1940s to 60s in the vein of Magnum or Life Magazine, with vintage prints by Werner Bischof, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ren茅 Burri, Cornell Capa, Robert Frank, Marc Riboud and George Rodger.
Alfred Eisenstaedt, one of the most productive photographers of the twentieth century, is represented by 12 photographs in total; among them his famous picture 鈥淒rumMajor, University of Michigan鈥. The auction features further icons of twentieth century photography, like Bill Brandt鈥檚 鈥淟ondon (Nude with Bent Elbow)鈥, 1952, Harold E. Edgerton鈥檚 鈥淢ilk Drop Coronet鈥, ca. 1957, Andr茅 Kert茅sz鈥檚 鈥淪atiric Dancer鈥, 1926, or Ren茅 Burri鈥檚 鈥淐he Guevara鈥, 1963.
With works by Moritz N盲hr 鈥 among them photographs of now lost paintings by Gustav Klimt 鈥 Heinrich K眉hn, Rudolf Koppitz, Erich Lessing, Inge Morath and Franz Hubmann, Austrian photography also plays a major part in WestLicht鈥檚 ninth Photography Auction.
