Rebecca McMillan: Diary of a Creative Mess-Mum Edition
Surface is pleased to welcome Diary of a Creative Mess-Mum Edition, a solo exhibition by Rebecca McMillan.
Diary or a Creative Mess-Mum Edition follows a period in McMillan's life just after graduating where she used her creative talent for illustrations and writing to alleviate her mental health, a significant part of the context surrounding her work while at university. The Mum Edition came into effect after the birth of her child when she was suffering from postnatal depression, and trying to preserve her sense of self.
The juxtaposition of bright colours and text express McMillan鈥檚 feelings and thoughts during the first year of her child鈥檚 life, often revealing some slight positivity mixed with despair. The creative process involved in the making of these illustrations helped McMillan through frequent dark days, and were part of how she managed to keep her creativity alive while navigating this difficult period in her life.
