Rembrandt, Rubens and Golden Age of Painting in Europe 1600 -1800 from the Speed Art Museum Louisville, Kentucky

Sep 15, 2012 - Jan 06, 2013
Organized by the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, and having traveled to other US venues such as, most recently, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, Tennessee, the exhibition Rembrandt, Rubens, Gainsborough and Golden Age of Painting in Europe from the Speed Art Museum, Louisville, Kentucky will bring to El Paso more than 70 major works by the three painters named in the show鈥檚 title, together with pictures by a wide range of other European masters of the 16th and 17th centuries. Just a few of the many other painters in the show are Tiepolo, Hogarth, Van Dyck, Teniers, Jordaens, Ruisdael, Boucher, and Panini. Highlighting the strength of the Speed鈥檚 European collection, which is the work of Old Masters of the Dutch, Flemish, Italian, French, and English schools, this comprehensive display provides a rich illustration of the distinctive character of European painting in this era, when remarkable cultural, religious, and economic changes led to major transformations in art, whether in terms of subject matter, marketing, or production. The exhibition is composed of dramatic portraits, religious paintings, landscapes, genre scenes, and themes from classical antiquity.
