Rhythm and Calm
Rhythm and Calm presents a range of abstract works from the ARKEN collection. The exhibition demonstrates the richness and scope of abstract imagery. Mathematical experiments carried out by means of rulers and compasses jostle with sweeping gestures and unfettered lines. Experimenting with form, colour and plane, these works expand the boundaries of art and engage us directly. Our freedom to see and experience the works unconstrained by preconceived, fixed meanings is the ultimate objective of abstraction.
During the twentieth century, abstract art evolved in many directions, encompassing straight-edged geometry, visual musicality and wild expressivity. Today, there are no rules. Rhythm and calm, harmony and chaos go hand in hand, and drawing 鈥榦utside the lines鈥 is perfectly acceptable. Stains and traces left by buckets of wet paint on the canvas can become part of the work on a par with the most deliberate brushstroke. Abstraction 鈥 whether tightly controlled or fiercely chaotic 鈥 is about involving us. About engaging our senses and bringing our imagination into play, and about inspiring us reflect on ourselves and our surroundings.
ARKEN鈥檚 collection is the museum鈥檚 backbone. It contains a wealth of thought-provoking treasures from our shared cultural heritage. This is art about the human condition. About what it means to be human and about how we might see life鈥檚 big questions in a different, clearer light.
