Twentieth-century printmakers sought to push aside the commonly accepted, defining characteristics of their medium, enabled by new technologies that allowed them to explore new forms of creation. Traditionally modest paper and press sizes expanded to mirror the large scale of artists鈥� canvases. Graphical representation gave way to painterly surface treatments. Rainbow palettes replaced monochrome inking. The result is a new understanding of printmaking鈥檚 possibilities and a 鈥渃atalogue鈥� of techniques and visual effects far greater than earlier centuries鈥� processes of etching, engraving, and woodcut.
