Seriously?

Feb 11, 2018 - Apr 15, 2018

The expression Seriously? indicates astonishment, as if one were to reassure oneself of the seriousness of a subject. It is indeed forms of humor and irreverence that have guided the selection of works in this first exhibition of the year at Triangle Bleu. Four artists - three Belgians, a Frenchman and a Parisian collective - present themselves, each in their own way, as practitioners of the art of the hoax.

Arnaud Labelle-Rojoux, heir to the spirit of Fluxus, is known for his performances, his works on paper and his installations. The Belgian Fabien Souche, aka Souche, has also developed an oeuvre that is characterized by an unparalleled sense of the craft. His are irresistible compositions created with derisory means. Laurent Impeduglia, based in Li猫ge, creates paintings in which characters from animated movies and video games are brought together in scenes reminiscent of the works of 16th century painters. Jean-Pierre Bredo, an artist who has been working with the gallery since many years, is famous for his caustic variations on the Belgian flag. The anonymous collective Taroop & Glabel deploys an equal sense of irreverence to tackle the most serious issues of our time with both precision and humor.

Both in the case of the four artists as in that of the collective, flippancy creates form. It becomes a veritable material. Apart from the humor that characterizes them, the works in the exhibition seem reminiscent of The Incoh茅rents and the early Dadaists who had given preference to humor and parody over the serious debates of art.
