Shek-O Sublime
The idea for the exhibition began with Chiu's love of the nature around Shek-O, a village nestled in a valley surrounded by the Dragon's Back mountains, Big Wave Bay, the peninsula of Cape D'aguilar and bordered by the open ocean to the East. The exhibition idea then expanded to the idea of this particular place- or place-making, and how life in Shek-O is so different to life in central Hong Kong.
And finally, by highlighting the essays and thinking of the sublime in the context of art history, another layer of connection is created. Chiu seeks to present the exhibition in a multi-perspective way, in order to break the practice of definitive view towards a location. The exhibition happily fosters the questioning and investigation of these 24 artists, young and old, historical and emerging, on the ways of looking at a particular location.
