Small Works

Apr 26, 2025 - May 31, 2025

Gallery MoMo Ryogoku will be holding "Small Works / Open Atelier"

In this exhibition, small works by gallery artists will be displayed in the space at the front of the gallery, and the back space will be opened as an open atelier by Chong Da-un.

I headed to a warehouse in Tochigi Prefecture to select works to exhibit during the vacant exhibition period. It wouldn't be a problem if the works to be exhibited had been decided in advance, but if you head to the warehouse with the naive feeling that "it will work out if you think about it on site," a harsh reality awaits you. You will be overwhelmed by the hundreds of works in front of you, and it will be difficult to select works. At such times, you will wander around the warehouse, thinking that if you just move, you might come up with something. Then, as if you were in the middle of moving, you will find something and stop, and memories will come up one after another, and you will find works that you want to exhibit one after another. Since the number of pieces has increased too much, I decided to "select small works this time" and further selected carefully. Although small in size, we will introduce a group of works that condense the charm of the worldview and techniques that each artist has built.

On the other hand, artist Jung Da-eun came to me for advice, saying, "My home studio is too small and I can't assemble the support for my large works." We worked together at the gallery on a closed day, and were able to see aspects of him that are usually invisible, such as the background of his creations, his daily struggles, and the difficulties of his activities after graduation. The conversation that emerged while moving his hands was very natural, and I felt that there was a rich story there that was connected to the work. So we decided to open half of the gallery space as an atelier.

I felt that by actively engaging with both the works and the artists, rather than being passive, various discoveries could be made. By using the gallery's free period as a "time" and "place" for the artists, I hope that visitors will also be able to feel the process and relationships. I would be happy if the open atelier, as well as the exhibited works, could be an opportunity for visitors to reflect on the process and background of the creation of the works.

Please feel free to drop by. We look forward to seeing you.
