Small is Beautiful
The exhibition SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL at Parkett鈥檚 Space in Zurich presents for the first time eighty small- and miniature-format editions made by artists since the founding of Parkett thirty years ago. The works are often smaller than a hand and rarely larger than a Parkett page. By presenting small objects, photographs, and prints in many media and techniques, the exhibition also explores the meaning of size and dimension in contemporary art and illustrates that inspired work exists independent from scale. To further underline this idea, the display of small works is complemented by the largest work ever made for Parkett, a three-by-seven-meter billboard by Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
On display are silver and gold rings by Jenny Holzer and Rudolf Stingel; Laurie Anderson鈥檚 鈥淗earring鈥; Sherrie Levine鈥檚 children鈥檚 shoes; Rebecca Warren鈥檚 tiny sculpture; Hiroshi Sugimoto鈥檚 miniature seascape photographs; the bronze ear by Christian Marclay; a hand-painted gold coin by Mark Grotjahn; Pipilotti Rist鈥檚 screen saver; a hand-sculpted bucket by Peter Fischli/David Weiss; and Pawel Althamer鈥檚 portable retrospective of twelve figurines and objects. Also on view are figurative works by Paulina Olowska, Mai-Thu Perret, and Mariko Mori; works on paper by Louise Bourgeois, Vija Celmins, James Rosenquist, and Ellsworth Kelly; and artist booklets by Christian Boltanski and Martin Kippenberger. The exhibition includes early editions for Parkett by Georg Baselitz, Meret Oppenheim, Andy Warhol, Rebecca Horn, and Markus Raetz as well as the most recent projects, by Valentin Carron, Frances Stark, Adri谩n Vilar Rojas, and Danh Vo.
