The Collection

Oct 22, 2009 - Dec 13, 2009
The Henie Onstad Art Centre's collection currently consists of over 4000 works. The collection has developed out of what we call the core collection, which originally sprung from donations from Sonja Henie and Niels Onstad.

Today, Sonja Henie and Niels Onstad's collection constitutes a historic documentation of a particular epoch of Norwegian art collector history. It is also an important part of Norway's collection of 20th century international art, providing a platform for international Modernism in Norway. By means of Henie Onstad's generous donation, which resulted in the opening of the Henie Onstad Art Centre in 1968, the collection was made accessible to the public, and it is precisely this collection that exerted a major influence on our understanding of Norwegian and international contemporary art. Over the years, the Art Centre at Høvikodden has functioned as a link between international art institutions and a centre for Modernism in Norway.

The collection covers extensive periods of the 20th century and features a diversity of artistic idioms and techniques. This exhibition presents a small selection of the works belonging to the core collection - works by major artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Miro, Leger, Gris, Klee, Villon, Dubuffet, Bazaine and Riopelle

During the years to come, the Haaken Hall will primarily be used for changing exhibitions of works from the Art Centre's collection, thereby allowing the public to become acquainted not only with classical works from our core collection, but also with the various forms of expression to be found in our special collections. Welcome to exciting encounters with our authentic art collection!
