The piece includes a wood Baobab tree, Adinkra symbols, and African fabric designs, all of which connect viewer to four hundred years of history from the African diaspora. Conceptually, the piece represents what it means to exist with an identity of your choice regardless of race, color, religion, nationality, gender, and ability. Baobab: Tree of Life was produced in a collaboration with Beam Center and its Project Fellows, a group of young adults who are recent arrivals to the U.S. Fellows learn prototyping and fabrication skills, gain the confidence to bring their own ideas to life and experience the power of making things together.
