Tim Smith: The Hutterites: In the World but Not of It
Manitoba-based photographer Tim Smith has spent the last 15 years photographing the close-nit communal community of the Hutterites. This pacifist Anabaptist group have roots going back to the 16th-century Reformation. They live communally in colonies spread across western Canada and the northwestern U.S., keeping their culture alive by staying separate from mainstream society and focusing on self-sufficiency. Sharing everything they have is a core part of who they are, making them stand out from other religious groups and the modern world. With over 45,000 members living in about 500 colonies, they have created one of the most successful examples of communal living today.
