Trevor Richards: Roll the Tape
This exhibition represents a cross section of Trevor Richards鈥 practice, surveying paintings and sculptural works produced between 1998 and 2023. The majority of works are drawn from the Roll The Tape project, initially shown at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery, then selected by Art On The Move to tour regional art centres from 2021 鈥23. This group of works has been augmented with a selection of recent works produced from 2018 to 2023.
Roll The Tape+ presents works which document the evolution of Trevor Richards鈥檖ractice over a twenty five year period. The exhibition showcases a range of works, from hard-edge abstract paintings to wall and floor based sculptural works that explore bold colour, geometric shape and pattern. He draws on a wide range of historic and contemporary sources, including Islamic patterns and mosaic tiles, architectural modelling and tessellations. He combines all within a minimalist, concrete art aesthetic which reflects an interest in the impact of built structures and pattern making in everyday life.
His limited colour palette has been a consistent feature of his practice for the past twenty years, allowing him to draw a unifying thread between diverse aspects of his production of paintings, prints, sculpture and architectural interventions. He has sustained an evolving career, exploring the conversation between structure and intuition, allowing serendipity and the circumstances of his life to generate new works. More recently he has extended his private studio practice into the public realm, completing temporary architectural interventions and also public commissions.
