The gender-fluid Surrealist Claude Cahun once quipped, 鈥淯nder this mask, another mask; I will never finish removing all these faces.鈥� Cahun seems to suggest that our masks鈥揷ode switching and learned affectations鈥揳re so infinite that any act of stripping them away only produces further encounters with artifice. Rather than attempting in vain to uncover some genuine essence underneath the superficies, perhaps the most authentic thing we can present to the world is in fact the masking鈥搕he layers accreted over time.
