Voices Of The Soho Renaissance

Dec 08, 2020 - Jan 27, 2021

The National Arts Club (NAC) and Soho Renaissance Factory (SRF) join together to present Voices of the Soho Renaissance. This exhibition鈥攖he first to explore the artwork born out of calls for social justice which transformed the Soho neighborhood over the summer.

"As New York moved from lockdown to a response to the call for social justice, the blank plywood surfaces of Soho served as the perfect platform to reflect and amplify the concerns, fears and optimism of our city. The artistic outburst undertaken by a loose association of artists, reclaimed a neighborhood and returned it to the creative haven it once was echoing and amplifying issues of artistic freedom, social justice and hope鈥 said Ben Hartley, Executive Director of the NAC. 鈥淲e are proud to showcase these revolutionary works in our historic building.鈥

鈥淧artnering with The National Arts Club is an honor for the Soho Renaissance Factory team and helps achieve our goal of revitalization through the creation of public art. At the Club, audiences have the unprecedented opportunity to witness a moment becoming a movement in near real-time. Our artwork conveys the effect and response to the events of 2020 while we continue to heal as a community of artists and citizens. Now we will take this inspiration to the world to create a generation-spanning movement of empowerment," said Trevor Croop aka Light Noise, a leader of SRF and exhibiting artist.

In the aftermath of the Black Lives Matter protests, Soho emerged as a source ofspontaneous creativity not seen in the city for decades. Local artists took to the streets to transform the blank plywood barricades put in place by neighborhood businesses as protection into positive and elaborate art pieces. This exhibition presents a selection of works created by artists in the forefront of this dynamic movement. Artists included in the exhibition are Konstance Patton, Trevor Croop, Amir Diop, Sule, Brendan T. McNally, Keiji Drysdale, and Manuel Alejandro Pulla. Also on view are more than two dozen photographs by acclaimed photographer Graham Macindoe (see image below) documenting the astonishing events which took place in the streets of New York City this summer.
