Who We Are, Where We Are
For eight years, the Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) Teen Council has worked to highlight the often underrepresented voices of teens in the museum space, cultivate leadership skills, and gain experience in coordinating educational programs and exhibitions. The Teen Council is composed of talented high school students from across the Jackson metro area. With guidance from MMA’s Mellon Post-Baccalaureate Fellows, they worked collaboratively to curate Who You Are, Where You Are using works from the Museum’s permanent collection.
As a group dedicated to cultivating community in our region, the Council focused on the role that community plays in shaping an individual’s sense of self as a thematic framework for the exhibition. Students selected artworks that invoke memories of family, the Mississippi landscape, and ways their roots here have fostered personal growth and mutual connection.
