Work in Progress: The Weisman Museum Collection at 30

May 20, 2023 - Jul 30, 2023

Over the last three decades, the Weisman Museum of Art has acquired more than 500 artworks, all donated to the museum by a long list of generous individuals. Representing a broad range of artistic practices, the collection includes works across media by renowned figures such as Bas Jan Ader, Lita Albuquerque, Polly Apfelbaum, Charles Arnoldi, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Larry Bell, Tony Berlant, Deborah Butterfield, Mary Corse, Llyn Foulkes, Joe Goode, Tim Hawkinson, George Herms, Rebecca Horn, Mike Kelley, Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, John McLaughlin, Ed Moses, Lee Mullican, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Alison Saar, Betye Saar, Julian Stanczak, and Brett Weston.

As the Weisman celebrates its 30th year, the museum is devoting all three of its galleries to the care and display of the growing permanent collection, which is usually tucked away in secure storage. Work in Progress is an exhibition in two parts: downstairs, recent acquisitions and rotating highlights from the collection will be on view; upstairs, in a gallery-turned-workshop, museum staff will be actively photographing, cataloging, and researching works in the collection, serving to make them more accessible for current and future audiences. We invite our visitors to enjoy this rare view into collection care and this unprecedented opportunity to see so many of the works stewarded by the Weisman Museum.
