The Georgia O鈥橩eeffe Museum, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, opened to the public in July 1997, eleven years after the death of the artist from whom it takes its name. Welcoming more than 1,800,00 visitors from all over the world and the most visited art museuum in the state of New Mexico, this is the first museum in the United States that is dedicated to a single woman artist.

One of the most siginificant artists of the 20th century, Georgia O鈥橩eeffe (1887-1986) was devoted to creating imagery that expressed what she called 鈥渢he wideness and wonder of the world as I live in it.鈥 She was a leading member of one of the avant-garde art movements that blossomed in New York in the 1910s and 1920s. O鈥橩eeffe鈥檚 images鈥攐ften instantly recognizable as her own 鈥攊nclude large-scale flowers, New York cityscapes, animal bones, and the high deserts and dramatic cliffs of her beloved New Mexico.

The Museum鈥檚 collection of over 2990 works comprises 1149 O鈥橩eeffe paintings, drawings, and sculpture, including promised gifts and extended loans. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is the largest single repository of O'Keeffe's work in the world. Throughout the year, visitors can see a changing selection of at least 50 of these works. In addition, the Museum presents special exhibitions that are either devoted entirely to O鈥橩eeffe鈥檚 work or combine examples of her art with works by her American modernist contemporaries. Over 140 artists have been exhibitied at the Museum including Frank Stella, Jackson Pollack, Andy Warhol and Arthur Dove.

The Georgia O鈥橩eeffe Museum Research Center opened in July 2001 as a component of the Georgia O鈥橩eeffe Museum. As the only museum-related research facility in the world dedicated to the study of American Modernism (1890s to present), it sponsors research in the fields of art history, architectural history and design, literature, music, and photograph through its annual, competitive scholarship program. The Research Center makes its unique archives accessoble to researchers worldwide as well as offers six scholarships annually to scholars from the nation's most prestigious universities.

The Museum and its Research Center are both Pueblo Revival-style buildings located two blocks from the historic Santa Fe Plaza and were renovated in 1997 and 2001, respectively, by architects Gluckman Mayner, New York.

Mission Statement The Georgia O鈥橩eeffe Museum is dedicated to perpetuating the artistic legacy of Georgia O鈥橩eeffe and to the study and interpretation of American modernism. The Museum鈥檚 collections, exhibitions, research center, publications, and education programs contribute to scholarly discourse and serve diverse audiences.
