For art lovers, Santa Fe is virtually synonymous with an abundance of art galleries. In this charming, historic city, full of low-slung adobe architecture and narrow, winding streets, art enthusiasts of all kinds will find something to suit their fancy. There are galleries displaying traditional, western-themed works, as well as cutting-edge spaces that deal in experimental, avant-garde material. There is fine craft - three-dimensional pieces made of clay, fiber, glass, wood, and metal - as well as fine-art paintings and sculptures. There are antiquities and works by living artists. There are numerous galleries of photography. And there are galleries that reach beyond the country's borders to deal in Asian and Russian art.
Just up the road in Taos is a smaller but equally vibrant art community steeped in history. Artists Ernest Blumenschein and Bert Phillips stopped here in 1898 to repair a broken wagon wheel and were so taken by the land and the light that they stayed, kicking off an artistic migration that continues today. Here, in addition to numerous artists, you'll find galleries gathered near the plaza as well as along the main road through town, Paseo del Pueblo, and its offshoots. Taos has a laid-back, relaxed feel that welcomes all art aficionados.
