A pioneering artist who worked at the intersection of Land art, Minimalism, and Conceptualism, Walter De Maria (1935–2013) used geometry and mathematics to create artworks that test the limits of sensory perception. In Walter De Maria: Surface Waves, the Bay Area native makes his SFMOMA debut with his first sculpture to enter the museum’s collection, an arresting floor piece known as Large Rod Series: Circle/Rectangle, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 (1986). Consisting of massive, precisely honed polygonal rods polished to a shine so lustrous that they appear liquid, the work can be shown in three distinct configurations, all of which will be presented during the course of the exhibition. read more...

This exhibition presents the work of John Dunkley (b. 1891, Savanna-la-Mar, Jamaica; d. 1947, Kingston), widely considered to be one of Jamaica’s most important historical artists. John Dunkley: Neither Day nor Night will include paintings from the 1930s and ‘40s alongside a smaller selection of carved-wood and stone sculptures. American artist Adam Pendleton’s exhibition titled shot him in the face occupies the Ground Floor gallery at BALTIC with one large-scale gesture—a wall that diagonally cuts across the exhibition space. The first sentence from the poem Albany by poet Ron Silliman functions as the exhibition’s point of departure. Pendleton appropriates the opening words of the text — "If the function of writing is to ‘express the world'" — and transforms it into monumental work spanning the entirety of the constructed wall. read more...
