Born in 1980 in Bonneville, France, Benoit Broisat lives and works in Paris. Broisat uses a wide range of media, including drawing, installation, photography and digital animation. His practice engages with the notion of representation, reflecting on the subjective nature of vision. He employs various strategies such as reconstructing actual spaces in model form, or breaking up the surface of an image into a landscape of signs reordered according to their capacity to elicit individual desire. Often departing from mass media representations of war, or given descriptions of landscapes and urban settings, his pieces reveal the constructed nature of any document or testimony that lays claim upon the real. Far from aiming to present true to life renderings, Broisat’s works demonstrate how individual memories and partial accounts generate the very spaces they seek to appropriate. Recent solo exhibitions include “Bonneville” at Imagespassage, Annecy (2008), “Through the Looking-glass” at Espace Vallès, Saint-Martin-d'Hères (2008), “Pop-Up” at Maison du livre de l'image et du son, Villeurbanne (2007) and “Place Franz Liszt” at Galerie Cosmic, Paris (2006). His work has also been shown as part of "Entre-Temps" at the Centre Cultural Oi Futuro, Rio de Janeiro and Musée d'Image et du Son, Sao Paulo (2009), "Retracing Exhibition at the Royal College of Art, London (2009), “Re-construction, Biennial of Young Artists” at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest (2008), “Roof Gardens” at MOT – Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (2008), “00s - L'Histoire d'une décennie qui n'est pas encore nommée”, the 9th Lyon Biennial (2007), “Alain Robbe-Grillet Art: Art and Architecture” at Serpentine Gallery, London (2007) and "I still believe in miracles" at ARC/Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris (2005).
