Born in 1973 in Stockton-on-Tees, United Kingdom, David Musgrave lives and works in London. Musgrave's practice explores the tension between object and image, materiality and form, often using an economy of means to intimate the human figure. He creates intricate sculptures and drawings located between abstraction and figuration. His works hint at anthropomorphic shapes and fossils, that suggest both future genetic mutations and Paleolithic remains. This tension between the natural and the engineered extends to Musgrave’s working process, which includes displaying copies of absent originals. David Musgrave has recently presented solo exhibitions David Musgrave, Marc Foxx, Los Angeles, CA (2015), David Musgrave, Luhring Augustine, New York, NY (2014), David Musgrave, greengrassi, London, England (2012), Marc Foxx, Los Angeles (2008) and Sorcha Dallas, Glasgow (2007). His work has also been shown as part of “The Front Room: David Musgrave & Erin Shirreff” at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Saint Louis, MO (2010), “Stain Pattern, The Bakery” at Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam (2007), “How to Improve the world”, The Arts Council Collection at Hayward Gallery, London (2006), “Lines of Enquiry” at Kettles Yard, Cambridge (2006), “Inner Go-Go” at Vamiali's, Athens (2006) and “Recognition, Anna Barriball and David Musgrave” at Arnolfini, Bristol (2003).
