The work on view at the massive exhibition is largely strong, but little of it creates a sense of discovery for visitors.

On a Tuesday evening, on my way to drop in life painting, I happened to glance through the open doors of gallerist Thomas Erben鈥檚 space to see Janice Nowinski鈥檚 current paintings being installed.

Now on display at The Painting Center, the group exhibition titled 鈥淭he Body in Question,鈥� a phrase cheekily resonant of a coroner鈥檚 report, explores the body as a vessel for communicating experience through painting.

On a summer evening, Janice Nowinski and I met in her home studio, a dedicated room of her apartment in a prewar Park Slope building.

Through the medium of paint, Nowinski seeks to connect the inner and outer states of her subjects.

Janice Nowinski makes loose, gestural figurative paintings that might be compared to the Bay Area Figurative Movement, but for their deep, dark palette and contemporary content.

These small, dark, unattractive paintings need some getting used to.
