Maciej Stepinski (b. 1972 Poland) photographer and video artist, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles (2002). Stepinski currently lectures on contemporary photography in France and Poland, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Media Art and Stage Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. For over a decade, Maciej Stepinski has been consistently modifying his works by removing some of the elements that could distract attention from what is not the subject of the image. The regularity of the composition, usually marked by bilateral symmetry is an idea of nature totally dominated and controlled by man, popular in the era of enlightened absolutism. Formal legal despotism manifests itself in the creative process, which is a subject of strict control. The lack of geographical information, photographic images deprived of time and place depict a boundary between the natural landscape and the city. Using French garden traditions and the disciplined German photography aesthetics of Becher's followers, Maciek Stepinski brings his own vision of order into the formally chaotic urban area. By removing people from the photos and thanks to the dynamics of creating an artifact, Stepinski does not show the action, but what has already been made. Maciek Stepinski t institutes Bresson's decisive moment at least twice: during the shoot and the post production. And it's not about the moment the photo was taken and when the motion stops, but about the removal of any signs of movement from the image itself. Maciek Stepinski has recently presented solo exhibitions in Project room, Centre for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw (2012), Printemps de l'Art Contemporain, Marseille (2011) 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica (2010), BWA, Zielona Gora (2010) Kordegarda, Warsaw ( 2009). His work has also been shown as part of IX Photography Biennale, Poznan (2014), 13th T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival, 'Midnight Show', BWA WrocÅ‚aw, (2013), ‘Enclave’ Centre for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw (2012), National Centre for Contemporary Arts, Kaliningrad, (2012), 'They don't know why', Waterside Contemporary, London (2011), Photo Month, Cracow (2008), Reality Effect, National Gallery Zacheta, Warsaw (2007), Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Les Abattoirs, Toulouse (2005), L'endroit du regard, CRAC, Sete (2004), 'Voies-OFF', Rencontres internationales de la photographie, Arles (2002).
