1953 Steinmetz- und Steinbildhauerlehre in der Dresdner Zwingerbauhütte, 1955 Zeichenkurse bei Jürgen Böttcher, genannt Strawalde, parallel Volkshochschule mit seinen Mitschülern Winfried Dierske, Peter Graf, Peter Herrmann und A. R. Penck. Zusammen bildeten sie die Künstlergruppe 鈥濫rste Phalanx Nedserd鈥�. Makolies, Graf und Herrmann wurden 1961 in Jürgen Böttchers später verbotenem Dokumentarfilm 鈥濪rei von vielen鈥� porträtiert. Ab 1958 eigene Bildhauerarbeiten.
