20th/21st Century Painting & Printmaking

May 05, 2017 - Jun 03, 2017

The great 20th century art critic Sir Ernst Gombrich said in his wonderful book The Story of Art, there is no right or wrong reason to like a work of art, each person brings their own life experience to it and any great work of art can be seen many different ways. On the artists鈥 side, those who are the greatest artists of their era are most often the ones that change the form of painting in some way, those who aim at a new way of seeing or feeling in order to connect with us. Their breakthroughs then open up new avenues for the next generation of artists to follow, or indeed reject. This new exhibition juxtaposes prints from 20th century masters like Picasso and Matisse with paintings or prints from leading 21st century painters such as Chris Gollon, Maggi Hambling, David Hockney and Peter Howson. Gollon in particular has innovated printmaking, especially monotypes and then re-imported those techniques into his paintings, by sometimes using printmakers鈥 rollers, sponges and fine art spray paint. Many of his techniques are explained in a recent book on his life and work by art historian Tamsin Pickeral, endorsed by Bill Bryson OBE (available at the gallery). As IAP Fine Art鈥檚 Director David Tregunna remarks 鈥淚 hope people enjoy the juxtapositions in this exhibition and see the journey painting and printmaking have made over the last 100 years. Also, just like Bryan Ferry doing cover versions of songs by Cole Porter or John Lennon, some artists鈥擟hris Gollon is an example鈥攐ccasionally do cover versions of other artists鈥 work. If you borrow someone else鈥檚 composition and subject matter, you then test your own technique and style against theirs. In fact, before he very sadly passed away last month,  Chris finished in time for this exhibition a Gollonesque cover version of Cezanne鈥檚 The Card Players.鈥
