A Gathering: Sculpture from the Collection includes 19 objects spanning a period of fifty-five years (1947-2002), and highlighting the versatility of materials worked by different hands. The artists in the exhibition employ steel, aluminum, wood, and found objects to explore movement, sound, origin, transformation, minimalist form, and the specificity of three-dimensional objects in space. According to
artist John Chamberlain, 鈥淓very material has a different density, different weight鈥 Every hand squeezes differently. In finding your place in sculpture, you need to find the material that offers you just the right resistance. As it turns out, car metal offers me the correct resistance so that I can make a form 鈥 not overform it or underform it.鈥
