About the Line: An Exhibition Exploring the Power of the Line in 20th and 21st Century Art
From ancient carvings on bone and stone to the intricate sketches and working drawings of Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht D眉rer, the use of line has pervaded art throughout the centuries and across many different cultures. From the rigidity of Piet Mondrian through to the Baroque of Cy Twombly, this exhibition looks at drawings, paintings and sculptures from 1900 to the present day, and will include works by Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Cy Twombly, Agnes Martin, Willem de Kooning, Bridget Riley, Brice Marden, Maria Lassnig, Julie Mehretu and Christopher Wool. More than a mere container for shape and colour, the line has a life of its own.
