Camden Town and Beyond

Nov 27, 2010 - Aug 31, 2011
Active around 1911-13, the Camden Town Group of artists embraced a range of approaches but shared an engagement with everyday subjects. Several members developed an innovative use of bold colour and abstracted form. The group鈥檚 title refers to the area of north-west London where the painter and founding member Walter Sickert rented several studios. This display focuses on key portraits by leading members of the group, including Robert Bevan, Harold Gilman, Spencer Gore and Walter Sickert. It also explores the subsequent development of British post impressionist ideas and style through portraits by such major figures as Augustus John and Mark Gertler.
