Carolus Enckell: Night and Day

Nov 27, 2015 - Jan 10, 2016
Galerie Forsblom鈥檚 Studio Space is hosting an exhibition featuring gouache, watercolor and oil paintings on paper by Carolus Enckell (b. 1945) from the early 2000s to the present day. Enckell鈥檚 works are firmly anchored in the modernist tradition, as evinced by their seriality and their distinctive treatment of color, form and light.
Night and Day
provides a rich overview of Enckell鈥檚 oeuvre. The keynotes to emerge from the generous assortment on display include symmetry of various forms, contrasted pairs, and gradations of color and light, yet equally striking is also Enckell鈥檚 finesse at expressing spirituality through geometrical forms and his immaculate command of color. The artist describes his approach as 鈥減ure experiential seeing鈥, meaning that his work is not intended to be deciphered or understood through the lens of acquired symbolic codes of interpretation, but instead it is meant to be felt and experienced with the senses. Enckell insists that it is only through experience that we can comprehend the true nature of color. Indeed Enckell鈥檚 art foregrounds the very essence of what painting is all about.
