Collecting with Passion: Contemporary Ceramics from the Lennie and Jerry Berkowitz Collection

Dec 08, 2010 - Apr 10, 2011
Lennie and Jerry Berkowitz are well-known in Kansas City, not only for their outstanding collection of contemporary ceramics, but also for their leading role as long-time supporters of the city鈥檚 visual arts. Their keen eye for works in clay formed a superlative collection by noted American artists, such as sculptor Akio Takamori and studio potter Ken Ferguson.

A selection of 17 of the 24 works designated as promised gifts to the Museum are on view in Gallery L7.  This exhibition demonstrates the Berkowitzes support for Kansas City Art Institute professors and graduates such as Ferguson, Takamori, Kurt Weiser and Richard Notkin.

Other promised gifts from the Berkowitzes will be the first works to come to the Museum by important artists such as Ruth Duckworth, Ah Leon, Adrian Saxe and Ralph Bacerra. This major gift will elevate and expand the Museum鈥檚 already impressive collection of a medium central to the arts in Kansas City.

Lennie and Jerry鈥檚 generosity led them to share one of the great collections of contemporary ceramics, hoping to serve as inspiration for Museum visitors.
