David French: Retro Active

May 17, 2012 - Jun 29, 2012
Engaging in abstraction while alluding to ornamentation, French鈥檚 curiously shaped sculptures reference the past and in their subtext, a darker aspect of contemporary society.
French challenges the current ethos of consumer culture, which clashes with the increasing awareness of negative effects on the environment and society at large. In his work, he brings to light both tension and irony in the personal drive towards luxury living that often comes with devastating ecological and economical consequences.

In the sensual twists and seductive surface of two large, white pieces in the show, French used modern day industrial and synthetic materials such as fiberglass, Styrofoam, Urethane, and automotive paint. The work portrays the irony of employing such materials with loaded eco-socio-political history that have been traditionally used in the construction of objects of adornment and privilege.

In the 鈥楩aux Bar鈥 series, crumpled forms in rich colors of gold, green and red evoke opulence, suggesting formal aspects of stylized robes and sashes worn by affluent figures in Baroque portraits. The visual effect is a combination of science fiction meets art history with elegance and optimism.
