El Greco and Expressionism

Beginning in November, the 'The Disrobing of Christ' by El Greco (1541鈥�1614), a particularly high-quality replica of the famous image in the Toledo Cathedral and one of the most popular works of the Alte Pinakothek, will be presented in the Pinakothek der Moderne. This unusual change of location is due to the partial closure of the Alte Pinakothek for renovations. The painting will be shown among selected works by Expressionist artists from the Sammlung Moderne Kunst. Acquired in 1909 under the former director Hugo von Tschudi, Munich's replica of the 'Disrobing of Christ' is exemplary of modern artists' and patrons' enthusiastic engagement with El Greco's work around 1900.
