Elvis Studio (HELGE REUMANN + XAVIER ROBEL)

Oct 18, 2007 - Dec 01, 2007
Adam Baumgold Gallery presents the inaugural exhibition of Elvis Studio (Helge Reumann + Xavier Robel) from October 18 - December 1, 2007. The exhibition will feature drawings and also works on paper, sketchbooks, paintings, artists鈥 toys, prints, posters and record covers by the enigmatic Swiss (Geneva) artists Helge Reumann and Xavier Robel, who have done collaborative work as Elvis Studio since 1996. Included in the exhibition will be Elvis Studio鈥檚 epic drawing 鈥淓lvis Road,鈥 2001, a one foot by thirty foot scroll drawing of a dense, hypnotic, fantastical metropolis. This drawing was executed spontaneously and alternately by Reumann and Robel over a one year period, and reveals 鈥渉undreds of mini-narratives with armed maniacs, rampaging crowds, chaotic policemen, overflowing hospitals, a forest of literal tree-huggers, and hordes of shoppers,鈥1 A new accordion-style book reproducing the Elvis Road drawing was released this year by Buenaventura Press. The exhibition will also focus on two large colored pencil companion drawings 鈥淓lvis Color A,鈥 and 鈥淓lvis Color B,鈥 2005, (33鈥 x 33鈥 each). These works mix Gumby-type characters with neo-Facists, 鈥淪exy Gun鈥 stores, yogurt shops and religious cultists in a riotous, claustrophobic dreamworld. There will be drawings, sketchbooks, record covers and paintings executed individually by Helge Reumann and Xavier Robel. Also the artists鈥 collaborative toys will be on display. Helge Reumann (b. 1966) and Xavier Robel (b.1971) have been important contributors to underground comics, graphic design, zines and art anthologies over the past decade. Individually and collectively as Elvis Studio, they have been contributors to the covers of Strapazine, Blab, Kramer鈥檚 Ergot, and Drozophile among many others. Helge Reumann鈥檚 work was included in an exhibition at the Swiss Institute in New York, and Reumann鈥檚 toys and sculpture by Xavier Robel will be exhibited by Elvis Studio at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris this fall.
