Facing the Future: Art in Europe 1945鈥1968

Mar 07, 2017 - May 21, 2017

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts (Brussels), ZKM|Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, the ROSIZO State Museum and Exhibition Centre, present the exhibition 鈥淔acing the Future: Art in Europe 1945鈥1968鈥. This project, unique in its scale, has been lasting for two years already and has been presented to the audience in Brussels and Karlsruhe. Despite alterations of the display from one exhibition to another, the general concept remains the same: it is a perspective outlook on the post-war art and culture of East and West Europe as an integral artistic scenery, created by artists of different countries no matter their political commitment.

The exhibition 鈥淔acing the future: Art in Europe 1945鈥1968鈥 features nearly 200 artworks from Russia and 18 countries of West and East Europe. The museums having provided artworks for the exhibition include Tate Modern (London), Centre national d'art et de culture Georges Pompidou (Paris), Nationalgalerie (Berlin), Stedelijk  Museum (Amsterdam), Muse茅e national Picasso (Paris), Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza (Madrid), 鈥淶ERO鈥 Foundation (Dusseldorf), Fondation Beyeler (Riehen / Basel), MUMOK (Vienna), Museum of Independents (Warsaw), Museum Tinguely (Basel), Magyar Nemzeti Gal茅ria (Budapest), Muzeum Naradowe w Krakowie, Olomouc Museum of Art (Czech Republic), Kunsthalle Emden (Germany) and other.

The exhibition covers a period of almost 25 years 鈥 a period of the century鈥檚 major war conflicts, new threats coming from highly destructive weapons and local wars that could easily transform into total ones. It is a period of collisions of the 鈥渃old war鈥 that separated peoples with its 鈥渋ron curtain鈥 and the walls that, by the end of the 1960s, separated generations of 鈥渇athers鈥 and 鈥渟ons鈥, whose ethical expectations from one another were sometimes set too high.

The five sections of the display include paintings, sculptures, installations, mobiles, performances documented on video and photographs, posters, and other materials helping the viewer immerse into the historical context.
