Often referred to as an artist of the people, Maqbool Fida Husain (1913鈥�2011) rose from his humble origins to become one of India鈥檚 foremost modernist painters. Born in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, in British-ruled India, Husain began his artistic journey as a billboard painter in Mumbai. Following India鈥檚 Independence, in an era characterised by ideals of democracy and nation-building, Husain鈥檚 art was marked by the quest to define a new modernity. This led him, in 1947, to co-found the Progressive Artists鈥� Group, a pivotal moment in the evolution of Indian art, ushering in a language of modernism previously unexplored in the country.
Husain had an intrinsic ability to forge deep connections with people, many of whom became subjects in his art. His approachability and accessibility made him a much-loved figure, and his eccentricities鈥攕uch as walking barefoot and painting in unconventional settings like concerts, homes and restaurants鈥攁dded to his distinctive charm.
