It hurts when I laugh
It hurts when I laugh is an exhibition of works presenting the achievements of the faculty and students of photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Szczecin. The works presented in the show at BWA Warszawa reflect the clich茅 topics which universities tend to overpromote and set upon young students who are striving to become full-fledged artists. It hurts when I laugh serves a metaphor for an embarrassed laugh or an ironic cough echoing somewhere in the halls of the Academy. Among the mainstream works of academics devoted to topics related to nature, queerness, activism or feminism, the works by the student body spread out in various directions. Sometimes a piece may amount to a timid copy of works by older and well-known artists, but often these are playful pieces created in the academic rush as a commentary on academic double-standards and, ultimately, a reflection on the art that reminds us of the reality of growing up in the 1990s.
