Joe St. Germain: Behind the Scenes

Jun 24, 2022 - Jul 17, 2022

The Workhouse Arts Center is proud to present Behind the Scenes, a retrospective of works by Joe St. Germain, one of Workhouse鈥檚 founding members. The exhibition showcases a career spanning over 40 years of professional set design and scenic art for the theatre.  His personal studio art in oils and charcoal illuminates his artistic vision behind the scenes.

Artist鈥檚 Statement: 鈥淚 design scenery because I like live theatre. The scenery of a specific play is derived from the script and the interpretation of the director.  As a designer, I decide what elements of the environment an audience will see.

I couldn鈥檛 be a scenic artist without knowledge of scenic design. As a scenic artist I appreciate the use of color to express my feelings about the play. This adds another layer of reaction for the audience.

Studio art and scenic art are totally different. 鈥淓asel art鈥 I make to express in painting my reaction to what I feel being alive.

Because of my theatre experience, controlled light is a major element of revealing the emotional content of the subject. 鈥
