Jonathan Monaghan: Alien Fanfare

Apr 25, 2014 - May 31, 2014

For his second solo exhibition with Curator's Office, artist Jonathan Monaghan premiers a 16 minute computer animated video installation entitled Alien Fanfare, chronicling a majestic invasion of a fantastical spacecraft. Part flesh, part baroque architecture, the alien vessel contains multiple levels of historical and cultural meanings; from science fiction to luxury furniture, the work seamlessly weaves cultural artifacts into a sleek and surreal CGI moving image artwork.

Presented alongside the video installation, Monaghan created a series of prints, called The Checkpoint, which depict a triumphal arch seen in the above-mentioned film. For his arch, Monaghan appropriates Albrecht D眉rer's famous 16th-century woodblock print. Monaghan reinterprets the historic work with his trademark mix of pristine architectural design, sardonic faux-branding elements, and pure whimsy. Additionally Monaghan will present small 3D-printed sculptures of elements from the structure. Monaghan will also present his much lauded and internationally exhibited Mothership animation on a monitor in the project gallery.
