Lubomir Typlt: Somnambu

Oct 17, 2020 - Nov 28, 2020

We have already shown works on paper by Lubomir Typlt, a former 鈥楳eistersch眉ler鈥 of A.R. Penck, in the context of an A.R. Penck exhibition in 2014. Now we are presenting a solo exhibition with current canvas works by the Czech. Typlt belongs to the well-known representatives of Czech contemporary figurative painting.

Not only a storm of colour sweeps across the canvases, violent winds shake the adolescent girls and boys, who are each aggressive and frightened, free and trapped, isolated and seeking support from each other, while at the same time dominating the pictorial world. In their somnambulistic state they divine many things, but there is no realization, they often carry their eyes in their hands or mouth, alienated from their actual function of seeing. 鈥淢etaphors are needed if we want to grasp the crises and vales of tears through which we are stumbling as terrifying or existential in nature.鈥 (Christoph Tannert in the catalogue text).

Typlt creates ruthlessly angular metaphors, they are terrifying, but nothing is more terrible than looking away and blunting. Somnambulism and puberty are intermediate states that are not fixed, endure contradictions, need no boundaries, are open to dreams and nightmares. The absurdity of the events, cruelty and coldness characterize Typlt鈥檚 paintings, but it is not only the violent movement of the brush that is noticeable, his figures are also full of energy, not giving up the search for knowledge.
