Miles Hyman: Undercurrents

Apr 10, 2025 - May 10, 2025

Philippe Labaune Gallery is pleased to announce Miles Hyman: Undercurrents, opening on Thursday, April 10th, 2025. This show features nineteen original paintings alongside a selection of drawings and strips, offering an in-depth look at Hyman鈥檚 distinctive approach to narrative imagery.

Renowned for his synthesis of American realism and European symbolism, Hyman鈥檚 work bridges two traditions he deeply respects yet constantly reinterprets. His latest collection explores the interplay of light and shadow, not only as compositional tools but as elements that deepen narrative and atmosphere. 鈥淟ight emerges gradually,鈥 Hyman explains, 鈥渋t becomes a real dialogue with the piece itself.鈥 Each composition unfolds organically, revealing layers of meaning and evoking a sense of the unknown鈥攁n effect reminiscent of his literary influences, including the work of his late grandmother, Shirley Jackson.

Jackson鈥檚 signature subtlety鈥攚hat Stephen King once described as her ability to instill fear without ever raising her voice鈥攔esonates strongly in Hyman鈥檚 paintings and his charcoal drawings. His ability to withhold just enough information invites viewers to lean in, to question, and to feel the quiet tension within his scenes. Much like his grandmother鈥檚 prose, his paintings and drawings create an eerie, almost cinematic tension by playing with what is suggested rather than explicitly revealed. 鈥淭here鈥檚 always something just beneath the surface,鈥 Hyman notes. 鈥淪omething a little off, a quiet unease.鈥 This narrative ambiguity is a signature element of his work, compelling viewers to engage with his works as though they are stepping into the middle of a story.
