Nobuyoshi Araki: Arakiss

May 19, 2021 - Aug 15, 2021

Nobuyoshi Araki is one of the most influential and controversial Japanese artists today. Though his work is well-known also beyond audiences commonly interested in photography, the variety and complexity of his oeuvre sometimes tends to be overseen in the general reception.

On the occasion of the artist’s 80th birthday and developed in close cooperation with Araki, the exhibition ARAKISS presents photographs from more than five decades of his career.

Including the monumental, rarely shown photo overpainting Kinbaku Shamaki, the exhibition examines recurring themes of his creation: his preoccupation with sexuality and death, the blending of documentary and fiction, his iconoclasm, and his pointed revolt against censorship.
