Nolde and Die Br眉cke

Nov 18, 2017 - Apr 02, 2018
Emil Nolde is one of the most outstanding artists of the 20th century. The group of artists known as Die Br眉cke formed in 1905 in Dresden, consisting of Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. They were among the most important representatives of Expressionism. These young men in their early twenties were enthusiastic about Emil Nolde鈥檚 鈥渟torms of colour鈥 鈥 a painter who was almost a generation older 鈥 and offered him membership of their group in February 1906. Subsequently, an artistic exchange took place between them. The group鈥檚 painting style was inspired by Nolde, who in turn was inspired by the woodcut, which was a domain of Die Br眉cke artists. However, Nolde, who 鈥渓iked so much to keep his wings free鈥, separated from Die Br眉cke in November 1907. Nevertheless, the artistic echo of their joint period influenced the artists involved for years to follow.
In this exhibition together with the Museum der bildenden K眉nste Leipzig, the Kunsthalle zu Kiel dedicates itself to this important chapter of German art history.
Central works of Die Br眉cke artists and Emil Nolde are accompanied by documents from various archives that paint a picture of the period and its artistic debate as well as vividly conveying the role of Emil Nolde鈥檚 wife Ada.
The exhibition, with participation from numerous museums and private lenders, will be carried out with the support of the Br眉cke Museum in Berlin and the Nolde Foundation in Seeb眉ll.
