Ornament: Exemplary Beauty

Oct 13, 2023 - Apr 28, 2024
Cosy, decorative, sensual 鈥 these are the qualities attributed to ornaments. Over the centuries, they have sometimes been considered beautiful and indispensable, sometimes a 鈥渄esign crime鈥. The cross-collection exhibition 鈥淥rnament: Exemplary Beauty鈥 at the MK&G exemplifies the changes in design and meaning of the ornament in different epochs and shows around 80 objects from the museum's collection. Among the exhibits are wallpapers by the Arts and Crafts designer William Morris (1834-1896), Japanese paper stencils and Persian ceramic tiles. Heavily ornamented prints are juxtaposed with the straightforward products of German design schools in the 20th century; an illuminated mirror by Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007), who co-founded the Memphis movement in the 1980s, celebrates the return of the ornament in design. The contemporary positions by Anna Resei, Anne Meerpohl and ANna Tautfest expand the design discourse to include the political dimension of the ornament, thus drawing attention to current issues such as climate change and feminism.
