Parallel Lines: High Modernism In Croatia 1949鈥1998

Dec 12, 2024 - Apr 13, 2025

The Parallel Lines exhibition features 188 artworks tracing the evolution of Croatian visual art from 1948, when Yugoslavia distanced itself from the USSR and socialist realism, to 1998, marking the reintegration of Croatian territories during the aftermath of the Homeland war of the 鈥90s. This era, shaped by Yugoslavia鈥檚 vision of a 鈥渟ocialist state with a human face鈥, nurtured High Modernism and Neo-avant-garde styles. Zagreb, particularly in the 1960s, became an international hub for artistic innovation, epitomised by the New Tendencies biennials (1961鈥1973), described as the Last Avant-garde.

Je拧a Denegri鈥檚 concept of art of the other line encapsulates diverse practices opposing socialist modernism, characterised by abstract and expressionistic figuration. These opposing tendencies coexisted, shaping a vibrant cultural scene through dialogue, debate, and confrontation. The exhibition highlights these parallel trends as complementary facets of an extraordinary artistic era.
