Printmaking as Placemaking
Printmaking as Placemaking examines the profound relationship between place and artistic practice, highlighting how creative expression both emerges from and transforms our environment. This exhibition examines how iterative and interactive processes reshape our surroundings, allowing them to adopt new identities, gain deeper meaning, and foster a sense of belonging on both individual and collective levels. Featuring works by artists living and working in the US and France, it showcases both traditional printmaking techniques and experimental approaches, incorporating sculpture, ceramics, and wall-based pieces, expanding the boundaries of print as a medium. At a time when conversations around the environment, migration, and cultural identity are more urgent than ever, Printmaking as Placemaking considers how artists use print to reflect, challenge, and redefine our understanding of place. Serving as juror for Printmaking as Placemaking, Sam van Strien is a 2024-25 Artist-in-Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN.
