Remembering: 60 Years Of Gallery Chemould
Chemould Prescott Road will be returning back to Gallery Chemould on the first floor of the Jehangir Art Gallery after 16 + years with an exhibition called Remembering.
For many of you who were brought up around art galleries, our exhibition will bring back a strong sense of nostalgia and one's fond memories growing up around the art that was held within that space. The show will honour artists and collectors; artists who have had a history with the gallery, and collectors whose stories are those that collections have been built upon. Ranging from the modern masters whose first exhibitions have been presented at Gallery Chemould, to works by the country’s most prominent contemporary artists, and also indigenous artists who Kekoo and Khorshed Gandhy gave the first ever opportunities to showcase their work, is the general mix of what this exhibition will comprise: it will be an eclectic gathering of drawings, projections, installations. We will show artists from MF Husain, Tyeb Mehta, VS Gaitonde, Prabhakar Barwe, Bhupen Khakhar, Jivya Soma Mashe, Hema Upadhyay, Tushar Joag, Rummana Hussain and more. Many of the collectors that we are borrowing these works from were seminal to the support and existence of a nascent venture when collecting art was a rarity. Homi Bhabha who would have been making a collection for TIFR, or Jehangir Nicholson who passionately collected art till his last breath, or Kaveeta Singh who went on to making a major collection, or The Sawhneys who bought their first painting, a Tyeb Mehta in installments of 100 rupees for an art work that cost 800 rupees in total!
