Shawn Kuruneru: Characters

Apr 20, 2024 - May 18, 2024

Koki Arts is pleased to announce Characters, the second solo exhibition at the gallery by Shawn Kuruneru. This exhibition will showcase nine new paintings.

Over the years Kuruneru has explored a logographic language of abstract forms developed through the repetition of gestures personal to the artist's hand. Shapes float in every direction in Kuruneru鈥檚 paintings, creating a multi-perspective experience inspired by 9th century Chinese landscape paintings鈥攁n anchor to his own Chinese heritage. Kuruneru鈥檚 all-over composition can be traced to Abstract Expressionist artists such as Lee Krasner, but unexpected connections such as to Alighiero Boetti鈥檚 Tutto and Simon Hanta茂鈥檚 Pliage also emerge. Kuruneru paints his own language of characters composed of blocky geometric shapes that oscillate between optical illusion and the material reality of acrylic absorbed into the weave of raw canvas. Using formal painting methods rooted in art history and autobiography, Kuruneru鈥檚 work is bold and playful, intimate and poetic.
